James Onnen, 72 of Iowa City, died on Monday, July 9, 2018 at the John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis, MO. Family and friends are welcome to a "Celebration of Life" which will be held with service color guard at the American Legion, Post 17, Muscatine Avenue in Iowa City on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at noon.

James was born on September 23, 1945 in Iowa City, the son of Chris J. and Wilma (Hatfield) Onnen. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He was a Patriot and loved this country. He served honorably in the Navy and the Army Reserve for many years.

James is survived by his sons Zachary (Mariuxi) Onnen and their son Mathias, of Coralville, Christopher Onnen of Kalona, his brother Donal (Cindy) Onnen of Iowa City, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Chris J. and Wilma Onnen, and a brother, Leo Onnen.
